In Arabic:

The word “wird” in arabic refers to something drinkable.

In Tariqa Karkariya:

The “wird” is the flow of light (as-sarayân an-noûrâniy) given from the shaykh’s heart to the mureed’s heart and which lead him to one of the esoteric Presences. It is the rope with which the mureed draws life water from his shaykh’s well and which revives his heart as the water revives dead soil.

The wird is the base of the mureed, It is the gate through which the mureed begins his path and this is why practicing the wird is an obligation. The wird must be practiced in its time (after subh prayer and maghreeb prayer) and the wird must not be delayed, exept in the case the mureed is unable to do it. The dhikr must be done with concentration in a calm and quiet place after closing eyes.

man lâ wirda lahu, lâ wârida lah

It means it is though the wird that Lights and the theophanies (tajalliyât) reach the Mureed. This is why the wird must not be done in a noisy place. In our Tariqa, the wird is obligatory for the mureed until his death without increasing or decreasing.

The honest mureed is the one who forgets his own will in the will of his shaykh. The wird is the first step towards this accomplishment in the sense that the mureed will wait patiently and will execute what his shaykh has decided for him without asking for extra because it can drive him to ruin. And if the mureed wants absolutely to ask for extra thing, he can implore the satisfaction of Allâh.

Jews caused their loss because they asked for extra. When they did not wait and asked for an other kind of food and then they received poor food. This is why jews came back to insouciance (ghaflâ) and why they followed the passion of their ego.

Everyone must be satisfied with what Allâh gave him and everyone must meditate the words of Allah ﷻ: “And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others.”
[sourah an-Nisâ’, verse 32].

Each one of us must be a sincere servant of Allâh, not the servant of the results got during dhikr and of the visions (mouchâhada). The wird is a part of the propriety of the servant while the wareed (results of the dhikr: visions, tajalliyât, Lights…) is a gift coming from our Lord. The wird is what Allâh expects from us while the wareed is what we expect from Him.

It has been reported that Imâm al-Junayd (radiAllâhu ‘anhu) did not abandon his wird even during his agony until his death. People asked hil why does he assume the wird. He replied : “who, other than I, would be more able to do it… ?”

People told him that some poeple stoped to do their religious duties because they claim they prayed so much that they did not need them anymore. He replied that those people arrived… in hell. He said that the case of a fornicator or a thief are seriousless than the one who pretends that he is no subject to his religious duties. Indeed the fornicator and the thief are sinners but they do not cross the limit of kufr, unlike the third one who turns back from his faith as one removes a hair from the paste.Bite in this essential basis with your molar and do not listen the words of those who studied Haqîqa from books and who says perverse and heretic words.

The Prophet ﷺ has said: None of you will have faith till he loves me more than he loves himself” and Allâh ﷻ says: “Say, [O Muhammad]: “If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.””
[sourah Âlu ‘Imrân, verse 31].

Take care to not denigrate the wird because of how it is not length. Indeed , the results of the dhikr do not depend of its length but the results depend on the purity of your heart. So saying “Subhanallah” once with concentration and high esteem of this word is better than saying it a thousand times with insouciance .

The shaykh of our Shouyoukh, Mawlay al-‘Arbiy ad-Darqawiy (radiAllâhu ‘anhu) said in one of his risâla (letters) a commentary of this verse : “And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of clouds.” [sourah an-Naml, verse 88]: “If you renounce entirely to “Douniya”, blocking all the ways leading to it ,then if you believe and have no doubt that your Shuyukh are on the trail of the Prophets (‘alayhimu salam) and that they are the heirs of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then by Allah , you will receive madad in every moment of the day and the night until your heart contains the Knowledge of Allâh. You will find rest in His evocation and you will be as the moutains.””
